Oppo, in my excitement preceeding the Formula one season, I casually mentioned the Australian GP to my colleagues, since that's what I'll be doing instead of hanging out, to which they replied, stupefied, "What's a Grand Prix?"

Yeah, that's pretty bad, but did he at least know what it meant?

It's a Pontiac. I owned one of those, once.

We never had Pontiac in Brazil, so he's excused for not knowing that one :p

I know how it feels. I told a girl yesterday that I was excited for the return of F1 and she replied: "What's so funny about watching cars racing in circles? Go get a life"

Yeah, they just don't get it... The amount of skill and courage that takes to build tune and drive a racecar alone are already enough for me, but everyone else will just say they're just "driving around". And then proceed to talk about a soccer match as if it was the most incredible and unbelievable thing ever.

Exactly. They don't think about all the engineering and all the emotions involved. A race is much more thrilling than a socer match (at least for me), but I think it's in our culture to believe that soccer is more important than every other thing. For an instance, I know a lot of people who doesn't even consider racing a sport, and that's just sad.

For what it's worth, soccer is pretty awesome. But I totally agree, people don't realize the physical effort and endurance required to drive an F1 car. It actually is a sport (not like golf or bowling...)
